Burlington was home to the first capital of the Iowa Territory from 1838 – 1840, and the second capital of the Wisconsin Territory prior to that. Over the years, Greater Burlington has been blessed to serve as an economic hub for the Southeast Iowa region. Since 2009, Greater Burlington has benefited from over $300 million in new corporate capital facility investment and the creation of over 1,300 new jobs. During this same period manufacturing has grown to be the area’s largest sector, employing over 20% of the area’s workforce. Greater Burlington is home to many domestic and international companies. Our success is a direct result of the combination of river, road, and rail infrastructure. In recent years, between 70 and 80 million tons of cargo have passed through Greater Burlington via truck, rail, or river.
